Inul Daratista

Inul Daratista (born Ainur Rokhimah, 3 January 1979) is a dangdut singer and performance artist from Pasuruan, East Java, Indonesia. Inul Daratista became nationally famous in 2003, and is known for her suggestive style of dancing that has caused major controversy in Indonesia. Inul Daratista is a corrupted version of Ainur, and the singer's childhood pet name. As she began her musical career singing in a rock band, she adopted the stage name Daratista.

Inul Daratista rose to national fame after a televised January 2003 concert in Jakarta. Her dance moves, which she calls Goyang Inul or Ngebor (lit. 'drilling'), quickly became the source of controversy due to her suggestive gyrating hip motions. Some conservative Muslim organizations such as the Indonesian Muslim Council (MUI) called for a ban on her concerts.

Inul Daratista was cited as a reason to pass a national anti-pornography bill that was drafted during the height of the controversy in mid-2003, but as of 2005 has not passed. Inul's dance styles was also criticised by other dangdut singers, most vocally Rhoma Irama, for "corrupting" the genre, though these criticisms did little to dent her popularity.

Gesang Martohartono

Gesang Martohartono (b. 1917) is a renowned Indonesian singer-songwriter from central Java, and composer of the song Bengawan Solo, a tune which has become famous throughout Indonesia, Japan and much of Asia, and which is almost synonymous with the kroncong style of Javanese music. He is most commonly known simply as Gesang.

Gesang Martohartono was born in the central Javanese city of Surakarta (Solo). His father owned a batik-fabric business, which however went bankrupt when Gesang Martohartono was still in his teens, plunging the family into poverty. Gesang Martohartono, a self-taught musician who was however illiterate in musical notation, supported himself and his family by writing songs and singing at local functions such as weddings and other formal occasions.

In 1940, during the Japanese occupation of Indonesia in World War II, the impoverished 23 year-old musician composed a tune (using a flute) in the popular urban local style known as kroncong, a musical tradition of the region which combined Javanese chord progressions with Westernised vocal stylings, instrumental arrangements and melodies. The style had its origins in the 17th century Portuguese influences on the region, and was at the time associated with the urban poor and as such had somewhat of an unsavoury reputation, particularly among traditionalists.

For the lyrics, Gesang Martohartono turned to the city's river for inspiration. The Bengawan Solo River is Java's longest river and most important waterway for trade and agriculture, and seemed to Gesang to symbolise the durability of Javanese culture in those troubled times. Gesang himself would later remark "I had dreamt since my childhood about writing a song of praise for the immortal Solo River".

Gesang Martohartono added the song, Bengawan Solo, to his repertoire, and it soon became widely popular among the local Javanese community. The song rose to national prominence when recordings of it were aired on local radio stations. It also found an appreciative audience among the Japanese occupation forces, some of whom took to singing it with lyrics translated into Japanese. It was popular also among the non-Javanese prisoners (principally Dutch civilians) of the Japanese internment camps, many of whom also spoke Indonesian. The simple but nostalgic lyrics and popular-sounding melody held equal appeal to the long-standing resident and the homesick soldier.

As World War II drew to a close, the returning soldiers of the Japanese Imperial Army brought the song back to Japan. In the dark period immediately after Japan's defeat, the song caught the public mood, and its fame soon spread throughout the country after best-selling recordings of it were released by popular singers, starting with Toshi Matsuda's 1947 recording. It was to be periodically re-released by various popular artists, and the song soon became almost synonymous in Japan with Indonesian music, many assuming that it was a centuries-old traditional song.

Versions of the song were also released in other Asian countries, and it has since been recorded many times by famous artists worldwide.

Gesang Martohartono remained in the city of his birth, continuing to compose and sing, his fame spreading through the decades. He became regarded as the leading exponent and senior figurehead of the Solonese kroncong style, which is now regarded as a respectable, even somewhat starchy and dated style, well and truly assimilated from its humble and scandalous prior associations.

In 1991, a group of appreciative Japanese war veterans arranged for a life-sized statue of Gesang Martohartono to be erected in a Surakarta park, to mark their respects for the composer of the tune that had managed to cross the cultural barriers of wartime.

Delon Thamrin

Delon (born Stanislaus Alexander Liauw Delon Thamrin on May 20 1978 in Jakarta, Indonesia) is a Chinese-Indonesian singer and runner-up in the hit reality series Indonesian Idol. Delon Thamrin, the youngest of three boys, grew up in a neighborhood of Mangga Besar, a highly-populated district in Jakarta which is identified primarily with commerce and trading activities and not with art, with the exception of night shows at some hotels.

Prior to Indonesian Idol, Delon Thamrin never had formal music training. His first encounter with music was when he joined a choir in his parish, the St. Petrus and Paulus Church. Delon's classical tenor voice made him one of leading soloists of this choir.

He got his degree in English from the Saint Mary Academy of Foreign Language. After his father died in 2001, he was compelled to work laboriously to help finance his family. During this period, he became a door-to-door salesman selling spring-bed and plastic ware. Later on his singing ability opened the door for him to be a wedding singer and an emcee—a not-so-fabulous start since the gig did not pay enough. At the time he entered the Indonesian Idol contest, Delon Thamrin was a non-managerial employee in a Japanese import-export company. He had to quit the job so he can follow his dream to become a singer.

His participation in the Indonesian Idol became a controversy, as he split the Indonesian public into two groups, those who loved him and those who disliked him. In fact, it was thought that he would win with sympathy votes after one of the judges behaved towards him in a manner similar to that of Simon Cowell, when the judge apparently told Delon that the reason he was in the competition was because of his looks. Delon Thamrin said that the remark hurt him very much and caused him to become depressed. But Indonesians saw that he tried to give a sincere smile to answer this comment and that he tried to improve his performance thereafter. This controversy made him even more famous, causing him to become a singing heart-throb, especially among teenage girls. His loyal fans are called "Deloners," and they have even developed a club which consists of Delon’s fans from all over Indonesia.

On 9 September 2004, Delon Thamrin became a runner-up of the first Indonesian Idol contest after his rival, Joy Destiny Tobing. A turning point for the young singer who went from a church choir boy and wedding singer to Indonesian Idol runner-up, and from a salesman to a rising star, Delon Thamrin is now almost an icon for Indonesian youth culture.

Delon's first debut after Indonesian Idol took place when he got the chance for the opening act for Blue Concert in Jakarta in October 2004, followed by the Air Supply concert in December 2004. His first album, called Bahagiaku (My Joyfulness), sold more than 300,000 copies in just under three months. Recently, Delon was voted as MTV's "Most Favourite Male" 2005. Delon Thamrin just finished recording a song ("Kokoro No Tomo") with Mayumi Itsuwa in Japan and has already moved to wowing audiences behind the screen, featuring in several branded advertisements and releasing his first movie, Vina Bilang Cinta, a box office rave in Indonesia.
Delon Thamrin has recently performed internationally for charity in Perth, Australia & Vancouver, Canada.

Affandi

Affandi was born in Cirebon, West Java, in 1907, as the son of R. Koesoema, who was a surveyor at a local sugar factory. Affandi finished his upper secondary school in Jakarta, but Affandi forsook his study for the desire to become an artist. Affandi taught himself how to paint since 1934.

Artistic career
In the 1950s, Affandi began to create expressionistic paintings. Carrying the First Grandchild (1953) was the piece that marked his newfound style: “squeezing the tube.” Affandi paints by directly squeezing the paint out of its tube. Affandi came across this technique by accident, when he intended to draw a line one day. As he lost his patience when he sought for the missing pencil, he applied the paint directly from its tube. The resulting effect, as he found out, was that the painting object appeared more alive. He also felt more freedom to express his feelings when he used his own hands, instead of a painting brush. In certain respects, he has acknowledged similarities with Vincent van Gogh.

As a renowned artist, Affandi participated in various exhibitions abroad. Besides India, he has also displayed his works in the biennale in Brazil (1952), Venice (1954), and won an award therein), and Sao Paolo (1956). In 1957, he received a scholarship from the United States government to study the methods of arts education. He was appointed as Honorary Professor in Painting by Ohio State University in Columbus in the United States. In 1974, he received an honorary doctorate from University of Singapore, the Peace Award from the Dag Hammarskjoeld Foundation in 1977, and the title of Grand Maestro in Florence, Italy.

Museum
On the bank of the Gajah Wong River on Solo Street in Yogyakarta, Affandi designed and constructed a home for himself, which also functions as a museum to display his paintings. The building is uniquely constructed, with a roof that resembles a banana leaf. The museum has around 250 of Affandi’s paintings. Regrettably, the high air humidity and temperature are causing concerns about the condition of the paintings. The Affandi Foundation, who manages the museum, finds it difficult to manage the museum properly, due to a lack of funds and revenue.
Before passing away, Affandi spent a lot of time sitting around in his own museum, observing his paintings. He said once, “I want to die in simplicity without giving anyone unnecessary trouble, so I could go home to Him in peace.”
After suffering a complication of illnesses, on Wednesday, the May 23, 1990, Affandi died. He is now buried in the museum complex, as he wished to always be surrounded by his family and his works.
